MENOMINEE — The final home game of the season turned out to be one to forget for the Menominee Legion baseball team, as the Red Wave were swept aside by the Marquette Blues in a doubleheader at Spies Field on Friday.

Marquette barnstormed their way to victory in both contests, taking game one 14-3 before wrapping up the sweep with a 14-1 thrashing in the nightcap.

Game one saw the Blues ambush Gable Buck in the first inning, scoring five runs on four hits, including an RBI-double from Easton Miller alongside ribbies by Aiden Steele and Carsen Belanger.

Gibson Jezewski used a mere six pitches to carve through Menominee’s half of the inning to put the bats back into the hands of the Blues.

Blake Walther cashed in with an RBI-triple before scoring himself courtesy of an RBI-groundout by Steele, as the Blues surged ahead 7-0 in the top of the second.

Menominee (7-14 overall) clawed its way into the game after Robert Finger led off the bottom of the second by getting hit by a pitch before crossing home plate off a single by Ethan Short.

Marquette retaliated with a seven-run outburst in the top of the third to seize a 14-1 cushion.

Needing to pick up at least four runs to stave off the 10-run mercy rule, the Red Wave managed to scratch a pair of runs across after Morgan Robar issued a bases-loaded walk to Carter Starzynski that allowed Dylan Beal to score.

Torin Davis plated another run for the Red Wave with an RBI-groundout, but Robar got the Blues out of trouble by striking out Aiden Sevon to end the game.

Menominee appeared ready to flip the script in game two after Finger tattooed an RBI-double to score Davis and give the Red Wave a 1-0 edge.

That turned out to be Menominee’s only lead of the afternoon, as Walther legged out an inside-the-park, three-run home run while Belanger and Dallas Cobe both drove in a pair of runs to help Marquette push its way to a seven-run cushion.

The Blues aimed to polish the Red Wave off with a six-run top of the fourth but Menominee managed to get a runner into scoring position in its half of the frame after Finger cracked his second double of the game.

Steele snuffed any thoughts of a Menominee comeback by setting down Hunter Brief on strikes before getting Buck to ground out to first base for the third and final out.

Marquette collected a combined 24 base hits compared to just six for the Red Wave.
