Wisconsin flags ordered to half-staff on Monday
Flags will fly at half-staff Monday in honor of a La Crosse area WWII POW. Gov. Evers signed Executive Order #236 Friday, ordering flags to half-staff in honor of Sgt. Jack Hohlfeld. Hohlfeld’s remains were accounted for in May of this year. After being subjected to the Bataan Death March, Sgt. Hohlfeld died on December 26, 1942, while being held captive at a POW camp in the Philippines. He was born in Vernon County and grew up in both Trempealeau and La Crosse Counties.
U of W regents agree to ask Evers for $855M budget increase
Universities of Wisconsin regents agreed overwhelmingly on Thursday to ask Gov. Tony Evers for an additional $855 million for the cash-strapped system in the next state budget.UW system President Jay Rothman has promised he won't seek to raise tuition during the life of the two-year spending plan if the system gets the money. Tuition and student fees at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the system's flagship campus, now total $11,606 a year for in-state undergraduates. When Sherri Fansler’s niece Liz was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in front of their 2 year old son, Sherri made the decision to give her family’s tragedy some meaning. Two days before her niece’s murder, Sherri saw a Facebook post where Liz had announced she had left her boyfriend because things wouldn’t get better and made the statement: “You Are Enough”. After some discussions with a nurse working in a sexual assault center, Sherri decided to provide hygiene items for victims of abuse because the makeshift supplies given out by hospitals were very antiseptic and she wanted victims to know know someone cared about them. Fansler called her effort “You Are Enough” in honor of her niece. When the project started five years ago, the first donation was 25 hygiene bags. Her latest drop off in April was 225 bags. Fansler told the Journal Sentinel that she is making a big push for October which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. So far she has enough supplies for 450 bags. She collects donations of “anything you would use in the shower. Fansler also collects clothes and feminine products the latter mostly went to Sojourner Family Peace Center. Full Story.
Community Haven House in Eau Claire to open in Eau Claire
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WLAX/WEUX) – An Eau Claire day shelter for those experiencing homelessness announces new hours that will go into effect September 1st. According to a social media post from Community Haven House. They will now be open from 8 to 12 pm Monday through Friday. Weekend hours will stay the same. On Saturdays, they’re open from 8 am to 2 pm and Sundays from 8 to 4. Community Haven House is located at 412 Washington Street.
Cochrane plywood plant down due to fire
COCHRANE, Canada — Rockshield plywood plant in Cochrane, Alberta, will be non-operational for up to six months as the result of a fire on August 12th. Company president Tom Scott says the flames appear to have started in a dust collector, but nothing is certain yet. He adds that Rockshield is looking at mitigation measures including buying lumber offered by its competitors.

Western Wisconsin United Way Organizations Open New Office
Two Western Wisconsin United Way organizations announced their merger earlier this year, and opened their new office on Wednesday. Nearly two months ago the United Way of St. Croix Valley and Dunn County United Way announced they would combine their efforts and become United Way St. Croix and Red Cedar Valleys. The organizations officially began their operations as one entity on July 1.
