The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled that it will not return Jordan Chiles' bronze medal despite “conclusive” evidence provided by USA Gymnastics .

On Sunday, just hours after the Olympics’ Closing Ceremony , the CAS ruled that Chiles’ bronze would be reallocated to Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. Chiles initially notched a score of 13.666 during the August 5 competition, right behind Team Romania’s Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who both finished with 13.700.

But Team USA’s gymnastics coach, Cecile Canqueteau-Landi, argued in an on-floor appeal that Chiles' score was incorrect due to the routine’s difficulty. Her score was subsequently adjusted by +0.1, bringing her ahead of Barbosu and Maneca-Voinea.

The CAS ultimately ruled that Canqueteau-Landi’s appeal was not made in time, stripping Chiles of her bronze medal. On Monday, the CAS upheld that ruling, as reported by The New York Times .

“USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement. “We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure that just scoring, placement and medal award for Jordan.”

Barbosu honored both Menca-Voinea and Chiles in an Instagram Story. “Sabrina, Jordan, my thoughts are with you,” she wrote. “I know what you are feeling, because I’ve been through the same. But I know you’ll come back stronger. I hope from deep of my heart that at the next Olympics, all three of us will share the same podium. This is my true dream!”

Despite the controversy surrounding her bronze win, Chiles still left Paris well-rewarded. She took the all-around team gold medal for USA gymnastics.
