REI is in the midst of a giant Labor Day sale fit for all outdoor adventurers who can’t pass up a deal. Everything from Altra's bestselling hiking shoes to camping gear like Mountain Hardware's sleeping bags and tents from The North Face is up to 40% off, but one of our favorite picks of the sale is a pair of Fjallraven's tough yet stretchy hiking pants that we've personally used and love. Not only are they a rare 25% off right now, but after wearing them, we're confident you'll want two pairs, at least.

Normally $180, Fjallraven's Vidda Pro Ventilated Trousers are now on sale for $135, and though even that price may seem high for a pair of outdoor pants, they're well worth the money. They are among the top-selling hiking pants at REI and have garnered 51 five-star ratings from satisfied customers who say that they are "tough" and "designed to be comfortable." They come in cool color combos with wear panels in complementary neutral hues, but you can also get them in solid colors like black and brown. They're available in European waist sizes 44 through 58 (US sizes 30 to 40) with some tall and short sizes available. They run small, so be sure to measure your waist before ordering.

These outdoor pants are different in construction from most US-designed styles because they have a variety of pockets on the front of both thighs, not on the sides like traditional cargo pants, though they do have small side pockets for things like pocket knives or other slim tools. The big bellow pockets have snap buttons and are divided internally into useful sections. Despite the business of the front, you won't find any pockets on the back, so be forewarned if that’s a deal breaker. We found that they aren’t needed—and can even get in the way—when doing stuff outdoors. The material is also a star feature, being made from G-1000, a tough, waxed textile made from recycled polyester and organic cotton that sheds moisture and can be re-waxed to extend its water resistance.

We own six pairs of Fjallraven pants in various configurations, but the Vidda Pro Ventilated Trousers are the style we find ourselves wearing the most. The stout fabric offers a ton of protection from branches and burrs, and the zippered sides allow you to air your legs when the weather is a bit too hot—just zip them back up when you need a bit more warmth. The pocket organization makes it a cinch to carry along lots of outdoor essentials and the adjustable hems on the cuffs allow you to dial in your fit to keep out dust and debris or let in more airflow.

Don’t just take our word for it—other outdoor lovers who have reviewed these hiking pants say they're some of the best around. "Best work/hiking pants," one shopper said. "I use them for hiking and doing yard work. They work well in the summer, especially with the zipper vents. They also work great in the winter because of the material and wax.” Other shoppers quipped: “I love these pants. Would definitely and will most likely buy again.”

There’s no doubt in our minds that if you need a tough, durable, dependable, and all-around great pair of pants for any outdoor activity, Fjallraven's Vidda Pro Ventilated Trousers should be on your radar, especially now while they're 25% off. These top-rated pants don’t go on sale often, so make sure you pick up a pair (or two) before they go back to their regular price on Sept. 2.
