On Tuesday, PlayStation officially confirmed the release of its latest console, the PS5 Pro. But the internet was quick to pounce on the “crazy” $699.99 price tag and the company’s seemingly á la carte sales approach.

The PS5 Pro does indeed start at $700, but fans were incensed to realize that the new device isn’t fitted with a disc drive (an additional $80) and doesn’t come with the vertical stand ($30). If you want those “additions,” you’ll be paying around $810. With additional taxes and sales fees, the final price will be closer to $900. Despite the promise of a higher frame rate and more realistic gameplay, consumers remained largely unconvinced of the new device.

On Reddit , r/IronMunger2 opined, “$700 for no disk drive is crazy. I’m not paying almost $800 to play a console with a disk drive. $700 for physical may have been acceptable, but digital only for that price is absurd.”

“Honestly, I kinda hope this flames out and puts an end to ‘mid-gen refreshes,’” r/terras86 said. “Just give me a solid PS6 with a disc drive in 2028 or so and I'll be happy.”

“It’s pretty sad for the state of this generation when like 90 percent of the games they showed are playable on last gen as well,” r/Trickybuz93 agreed.

Criticism on Twitter was equally unsparing, as Playstation fans from around the world voiced their outrage. “Man, this is wild to watch the absolutely biting reaction Sony gamers are having today to the PS5 Pro showcase,” @cptbanans marveled.

“I'm glad the average reaction I'm seeing to the PS5 Pro is that it's pointless and overpriced,” @Xalentha said. “I guess consumers aren't always brainless.”

The entire episode was well summed up by user @nese_szn, who remarked, “The way I’ve seen zero positive reactions about the PS5 Pro…”

You can check out the PS5 Pro for yourself (or maybe not) when it hits stores on Nov. 7.

$700 bucks for this with slight improvements and no physical disc is absurd. I got rid of my PS5 several years ago because the games are so blah and not worth my time.
