California Gin Named Best Flavored Gin in the World

Gin might have originated in Europe, but in 2024, some of the world's best gins don't even originate from the continent.

Spirits professionals judged more than 7,000 different liquors at this year's International Wine & Spirit Competition to determine some of the best in every category for avid imbibers around the world. Once the various gold and silver medal winners were chosen, the testers went back to pick just 24 of the best of the best spirits to award coveted IWSC trophies.

It turns out you don't have to look outside the 50 states to find the best flavored gin in the world. California-based Junipero Gin, the distillery behind the U.S.'s first craft gin , took home the top honors for their Smoked Rosemary gin , earning the crown of the best flavored gin on the planet this year.

According to the experts, Junipero's Smoked Rosemary gin has "an inviting nose with rosemary leading the way." "Dry resinous notes and well-managed smoke add depth," they said, creating a palate filled with " smoked rosemary , juniper, and hints of fresh lemon" topped off with "a pleasant, clean, well-balanced finish." And don't expect to break the bank to get your hands on a bottle either; it's currently selling for $35 on Junipero's website .

Meanwhile, the overall best gin in the world also didn't go to any European liquors. Instead, the trophy was awarded to Australia 's Naught Distilling Overproof Gin, described by IWSC judges as having "enticing aromas of vanilla and pepper" and "a smooth and integrated palate filled with berry fruits."
