The storied rivalry between tennis legends Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal dates back two decades and remains one of the biggest in the sport's history. Federer hung up his racket back in 2022, and with Nadal's announcement today that he's also stepping off the court for good, the Swiss superstar is happy to welcome his Spanish counterpart into the world of retirement.

Federer shared his thoughts on Nadal's retirement announcement in a comment on Nadal's Instagram post. "What a career, Rafa!" he said, per The Tennis Letter . "I always hoped this day would never come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love. It’s been an absolute honor."

Federer isn't the only Nadal rival to mark the Spanish star's retirement. Novak Djokovic , whom Nadal has played against dozens of times over the years, similarly expressed his gratitude.

"Rafa, one post is not enough to express the respect I have for you and what you have done for our sport," the Serbian player wrote on Instagram. "You have inspired millions of children to start playing tennis and I think that's probably greatest achievement anyone can wish for. Your tenacity, dedication, fighting spirit is going to be taught for decades. Your legacy will live forever.

"Only you know what you had to endure to become icon of tennis and sport in general," he added. "Thank you for pushing me to the very limit so many times in our rivalry that has impacted me the most as a player. Your passion for representing Spain has always been remarkable."

Djokovic ended with a promise to watch his former rival close out his career next month, hopefully on a high note. "I wish you best possible farewell in Málaga with [the] Davis Cup team of Spain. I will be there in person to pay respect to your stellar career," he said.

Other tennis world stars like Andy Roddick , Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannick Sinner similarly thanked Nadal for his hard work on the court and shared their personal stories of being inspired by him over the years.

Carlos Alcaraz, the 21-year-old Spanish breakout star who played doubles alongside his idol Nadal at the Olympics this year, marveled at his own journey in the context of Nadal's career.

"From the child who watched you on television and dreamed of becoming a tennis player to the one who had the immense gift of playing alongside you at Roland Garros representing Spain in the Olympic Games! Thank you very much for being an example at all levels, your legacy is unrepeatable!" he wrote on X. "I have enjoyed you very much and I will miss you very much when you leave after the Davis Cup, Rafa!"

Nadal's last time on the court will be in the Davis Cup finals from Nov. 19 to 24.
