Liam Payne Dead at 31

British singer Liam Payne, who rose to fame as part of the beloved boy band One Direction, has died at the age of 31.

The singer was staying at CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina when he fell from a balcony, state police told Good Morning America . Witnesses told TMZ they saw him fall from his room on the third floor of the hotel and onto the pool deck below. Payne had been spending time in Argentina and recently had a small One Direction reunion after attending a Niall Horan concert in Buenos Aires earlier this month.

Payne became a household name in 2010 when One Direction was formed on The X Factor in the U.K., becoming one of the hottest names in pop alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik , Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. After the band parted ways, Payne launched a solo career with the double-platinum single "Strip That Down" in 2017. He went on to release an EP, First Time , in 2018 and a solo album, LP1 , the following year.

He's survived by his son Bear Grey Payne and partner Kate Cassidy.
