HOA Members Spark Dispute After Calling Cops on Kids

Having a lemonade stand is a rite of passage for many American children. But not everyone finds joy in young people setting up shop on the side of the road. In one Colorado neighborhood, this disdain turned into a dispute between residents.

It all started when children in the Wildernest community outside Breckenridge put up a lemonade stand in their neighborhood. The seemingly innocuous roadside business became a point of contention after members of the local homeowner association called the cops on the kids.

"HOA members in Wildernest reported children running an illegal lemonade stand on county right-of-way," the Summit County Sheriff's Office said in a statement . "Deputies arrived on scene and found that the children were not blocking the roadway but did ask them to move back from the road a few feet for their safety. They did not find an issue with the location of the stand."

While that should've been the end of it, the kerfuffle was only getting started.

"While deputies moved on to deal with parking issues in the area, the original reporting parties came out and began yelling at the children claiming they were on private property," authorities said. "Deputies came back and determined the property was shared HOA property and because the children’s parents are part of the HOA they had a right to be there."

It's probably safe to say the residents who called the cops on the kids won't be happily cooling off with some fresh lemonade this summer.
