MLB Pitcher Vomits on Mound for Second Time in Months

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene put forth a valiant effort in a game against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday, but the 25-year-old may have suffered a case of the nerves and puked on the mound midway through the game. And it was the second such episode in less than two months.

The moment came during the fifth inning. In video from the live broadcast that has since surfaced online, Greene can be seen walking a few steps from the mound and holding his glove up to his face before a spray of vomit shot out from between the webbing. "Uh oh, an announcer can be heard saying before the video cut off.

"Yeah, I'm not checking that glove for foreign substances," quipped pitching analyst Rob Friedman, who posted the clip online. "You're good, dude."

Yet, for his apparent stomach troubles, Greene ended up pitching through seven innings, giving up only one run on four hits and striking out eight of the opposing team's players. When all was said and done, it brought his season ERA down to 2.83.

Oddly enough, Greene experienced a similar upset stomach on June 25 immediately after throwing a 95 mph fastball during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. According to Cardinals beat writer John Denton, the latest is apparently one of several incidents this season in which he's gotten sick.

It's unclear if Greene is experiencing an ailment other than nerves, but team manager David Bell brushed off any concerns following the game, which the Reds ultimately won 4–1.

"I think a lot of us feel like throwing up during the game sometimes, and it doesn't come out," Bell noted during the post-game press conference. "Maybe he just feels better after that."
