Browns place OL Brian Allen on IR, ending his season
The Cleveland Browns placed new acquisition Brian Allen (calf) on injured reserve on Monday, ending the center's season. Allen, 28, who signed with the Browns in May, suffered a calf injury on the third day of training camp. The Browns announced the signing of guard Zack Johnson in a corresponding move. Allen was drafted in the fourth round by the Los Angeles Rams in 2018. In 2021, he made 16 starts in the regular season and four more in the playoffs as Los Angeles marched to a Super Bowl LVI championship. Allen then missed 22 of the Rams' 34 games over the past two seasons. He dealt with knee and thumb injuries in 2022 and lost his starting job to Coleman Shelton last season. The Browns have centers Ethan Pocic and Luke Wypler on the roster. Pocic made 15 starts last season for Cleveland, while Wypler played in five games (one start) as a 2023 rookie. --Field Level Media

Mailbag: What will determine if Browns sign Amari Cooper to extension?
Q: Now that Amari Cooper has been signed for this season, do you think the club waits to see just how impactful Jerry Jeudy becomes and whether Cedric Tillman and/or Jamari Thrash show enough to let Cooper become a free agent after this season? Or would you sign him to a costly extension if Cooper stays healthy and puts up numbers like he did in 2023? I don’t think Cooper will sign for less than $25M-$30M for 2025, and his agent probably wants to get him a multiyear deal, given his age. What do you think?

Jose Ramirez belts two HRs, Guardians top Tigers
Jose Ramirez homered twice and drove in three runs as the visiting Cleveland Guardians rolled past the Detroit Tigers 8-4 on Monday night. Guardians starter Tanner Bibee (9-4) gave up two runs and seven hits in six innings. Wenceel Perez hit a two-run homer for the Tigers. Dillon Dingler, making his major league debut, had a run-scoring double. Bryan Sammons, also making his major league debut, gave up five runs and four hits in 7 1/3 innings in relief. Angel Martinez smacked a one-out double and scored on a Ramirez double. Josh Naylor brought home Ramirez with a single. With two outs, Andres Gimenez and Jhonkensy Noel singled to bring in Naylor and end Brieske's night. Ramirez blasted a changeup from Sammons for his 25th homer leading off the third inning. He smashed a curveball over the left-center field wall with two outs in the seventh. Detroit broke through in the bottom of the seventh. Mark Canha and Bligh Madris had back-to-back singles. Lane Thomas fills significant need, but Guardians pay hefty price to Nationals
Deal details: Cleveland Guardians acquire OF Lane Thomas from the Washington Nationals for LHP Alex Clemmey, SS José Tena and IF Rafael Ramirez, Jr. Cleveland needed outfield help, and more generally some offensive help, and they turned out to be one of the teams that lined up the best with the Nationals, who’ve been willing to trade Lane Thomas but didn’t want to let him go for the price of a platoon bat. As a result, the Guardians paid a hefty price for a player who clearly helps them, and the Nats do very well for a player who’s been great for them for almost two years now but who’s about to get squeezed out by younger talent.
How to buy Cleveland Browns tickets. See prices for games on 2024 schedule
As NFL training camp gets underway across the league, the Cleveland Browns have a multitude of storylines we're following before the season proper even begins. Wide receiver Amari Cooper restructured his contract with the team, avoiding a camp holdout in the process — though he'll still be a potential free agent at season's end. Running back Nick Chubb, coming off multiple knee surgeries, and cornerback Greg Newsome II began training camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. And QB1 Deshaun Watson, coming off his own season-ending shoulder surgery a year ago, seems on track to compete with the team from Week 1.
