Carbon removal startup to work at Friday Harbor labs
Next summer, the Seattle-based startup Banyu Carbon will be testing carbon-extraction technology at the Friday Harbor Marine Labs in an effort to deacidify ocean environments and reduce the harmful impact of climate change on marine ecosystems. Co-founders Alex Gagnon and Julian Sachs have extensive experience conducting fieldwork at the Friday Harbor labs as chemical oceanography faculty for the University of Washington, and they believe San Juan Island is an ideal location to test their equipment.
Power outage caused by balloons impacts over 7,000 Seattle homes
SEATTLE - Officials say foil balloons landing in power lines caused an outage that affected about 7,500 homes in downtown Seattle and the Beacon Hill neighborhood. Seattle City Light (SCL) announced the outage was caused by Mylar balloons — Mylar being the foil-like material — coming into contact with power lines. According to SCL, crews responded to an outage in the downtown and Beacon Hill area on Sunday evening.

Big Mario’s Is Selling the Northlake Tavern a Year After Opening
One of Seattle’s veteran pizzerias is up for sale less than a year after opening under new ownership. Last week local pizza chain Big Mario’s announced that it would be moving on from its Northlake Tavern location in the University District. The restaurant will be closed for a “summer break,” a press release said, reopening at the end of August for the start of college football season. In the meantime, owner Jason Lajeunesse (who runs the Daydream State hospitality and events brand) will be looking for someone to buy the business and take it over.
