    Meriden to establish Wilcox Tech scholarship in honor of alum, DOT worker killed

    MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The City of Meriden is among those wanting to honor native Andrew DiDomenico, the 26-year-old killed by a driver on the Wharton Brook Connector last week.

    City officials Monday announced they’ll be collecting donations in lieu of flowers to help establish a scholarship which will benefit a Wilcox Technical High School student in his memory.

    The former city employee graduated from the school in 2017.

    On Friday, June 28, DiDomenico was working for the Department of Transportation (CTDOT) alongside the shoulder of Exit 13 when a vehicle on the on-ramp left the travel portion of the road and hit him, according to state police. He died at the scene.

    The driver- 55-year-old Denise Lucibello of East Haven- failed a field sobriety test at the scene and was arrested on multiple charges, including illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

    CTDOT worker fatally struck on Interstate 91 in Wallingford

    An obituary from the Wallingford Funeral Home says DiDomenico was a dedicated CTDOT worker “with unwavering work ethic” who worked as a maintainer based out of the Wallingford Garage for more than two years.

    He also helped his dad with masonry work and lawn care and previously worked at Hunters Golf Course in the summer, maintaining the lawns.

    “Andrew possessed a kind and generous heart, whose beautiful soul will be greatly missed by all who knew him,” the obituary reads .

    According to his obituary, DiDomenico was an avid golfer and loved sports. He will be remembered for cherishing time spent with his family.

    DiDomenico’s family will receive relatives and friends at the Wallingford Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 5.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated the next day at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Meriden, at 10 a.m. He will be entombed at the Sacred Heart Cemetery Mausoleum in Meriden.

    Those wishing to donate to the scholarship fund can send checks made payable to the Andrew DiDomenico Scholarship Fund c/o 60 Edgemark Acres, Meriden, CT 06451.
