MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The family of a woman who died at a hospital in Meriden was awarded $15.4 million in a medical malpractice case, according to a release.

In 2017, Maria Ocasio, 57, went to Midstate Medical Center to get a brief outpatient scoping procedure, which required anesthesia. At the end of the procedure, Ocasio suffered a cardiorespiratory collapse, and the lawsuit claimed that staff failed to attempt resuscitation.

Ocasio suffered catastrophic brain damage as a result of her injuries, and spend the last month of her life in the intensive care unit.

“Our mother had to fight all of her life, and she would have wanted us to keep fighting,” her sons Alex, Luis and Brian Ocasio said in a joint statement. “We are grateful to the jury for honoring her memory with this verdict.”
