MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Animal shelters and rescues across Connecticut are at capacity and in need of help.

Over the weekend, the Meriden Humane Society took in 13 animals. Ten of those animals were unexpectedly surrendered, with people showing up with animals at the shelter.

“The shelters around Connecticut are very much taxed,” said Michele Carey, a volunteer at the Meriden Humane Society.

The shelter has been flooded with phone calls, emails and surrender forms on its website. Carey said it’s challenging for the staff and volunteers.

“We have to scramble to make sure we have enough space and supplies for a certain number of animals,” she said.

Connecticut animal control shelters see bump in calls, arrivals since July 2

The Meriden Humane Society believes several factors are contributing to the increase.  That includes:

    • More people adopting during the pandemic
    • Spay and neuter clinics closed due to COVID-19
    • The economy

Carey said it’s important to have a plan before adopting an animal.

“Everyone should have a plan for them, in case something happens to you, and you can’t care for your animal in the interim or longer-term,” she said.

Like other shelters that are experiencing this across the state, there are ways to help. Carey said the shelter is always looking for volunteers and appreciates the support it receives. It also relies on donations from the community.

Right now, one of the shelter’s greatest needs is canned cat food. The shelter is also looking for forever homes for the animals in their care.

If you’re interested in helping, check out the Meriden Humane Society’s website. Its fundraiser, Putting for Paws, is scheduled on Aug.17.
