The Quilt Guild at the Bosque Arts Center has sew much fun that they will leave you in stitches.

The guild counted 20 members in its current ranks who are now looking for more folks interested in joining them.

The group officially started a year after the BAC’s first quilt show in June 2015; the show was a great success, with over 50 quilts entered in the local competition.

The guild’s current members come from across all different experience levels – from complete novices to engineer types – and they’re more than willing to teach their craft with people young or old, male or female, artsy or square.

In fact, Lundberg co-founded the show and the guild when she was a beginner quilter; the guild’s current president Cindy Upton considers herself a newbie still. Original member Glenda Sager owned and operated a quilting supply shop – Quilting Cousins – in Clifton for seven years.

The membership is not only comprised of women but also men who practice the art of quilting and regularly attend the guild’s meetings.

Both Steve Chamber and Bill Pugh practice long-arm quilting which is performed on a large machine.

    Service projects

The guild’s members take inspiration from traditional patterns as well as modern designs, including characters from pop culture.

“Quilting is universal. It’s all over the world,” Lundberg said.

Upton added that for her grandchildren, she created a quilt that featured characters from the popular Minecraft video game.

“Quilting is a good grandmother skill,” she said. “I’ve sewn my grandkids quilts, and they enjoy them. It’s something they can keep forever.”

If you’re also interested in enriching the community, the Quilt Guild is your group.

The guild’s members put their skills to work for the benefit of folks across Central Texas.

Individual members create special “prayer quilts” for those in need, “Quilts of Valor” for veterans, “Linus Quilts” for children receiving cancer treatment, “Pillow Cases” for the Veterans Administration, and “Fidgets” for Alzheimer’s patients.

During their February meeting, the guild members agreed to partner with Harbor Hospice, a healthcare service provider that administers comfort and care to individuals who are terminally ill.

The type of quilts the volunteers agreed to make will be weighted to relieve anxiety in patients in the hospice services’ care.

    Membership

Membership to the quilt guild is free if you’re a paid member of the BAC.

The guild meetings are on the second Saturday of the month at 11:30 a.m. at the art room on the first level of the Bosque Arts Center in Clifton.

The first 30 minutes is a social hour prior to the program which features a guest speaker.

Oftentimes the guest speaker will be one of the members who have a special skill to share; other times, the guest might be a community member talking about their organization.

The Quilt Guild’s current officers include Cindy Upton, president; Steve Chambers, vice president; Linda Pfeiffer, secretary / treasurer; Cheryl Lundberg, program director; and Glenda Sager, public relations.
