The Meridian Independent School District’s Band Department held its spring band concert on Thursday, February 22, in the Meridian High School Gymnasium.

The theme of the concert was appreciation for military veterans and public-school teachers.

The concert opened with Trent Pruitt on electric guitar playing the “Star-Spangled Banner.”

Next the 6th grade band performed “Tyrannosaurus Rocks,” composed by Mike Hannickel.

MISD Band Director Daniel Yguerabide noted that at least half of the 6th grade band played the song from memory.

Meridian’s 7th grade band followed with a performance of “Furioso,” composed by Robert W. Smith.

In honor of veterans, the Meridian High School concert band performed “The Pacific (main title)” composed and arranged by Hans Zimmer, B. Nelly, and T. Ricketts.

Between musical numbers, Yguerabide invited active military service members and their families to be recognized.

Next to recognize current public-school teachers, support staff, administrator, substitute teachers, and bus drivers was music student Ben Beaudin.

“Thank you for not giving up on us, even though it may seem hard, and it may seem like it’s not worth it,” Beaudin said. “We love and appreciate all of you teachers. We’re so thankful to have y’all in our lives.”

Several Meridian ISD students distributed thank you cards and flowers to the honored guests.

The Bosque Veterans Memorial’s project coordinator Andrea Wallum gave a brief update on the project, encouraging folks to donate funds to the memorial.

Wallum noted that the monument honors not just veterans from Bosque County but also those from outside the county.

During the evening, representatives from each band, such as Sophie Richardson, introduced the audience to the bands prior to their songs.

Music student Zeek Mabry noted that the high school band would play a selection from its UIL concert and hoped to place in the sweepstakes competition on Wednesday, March 6.

The band followed by John Edmondson’s composition “La Fiesta Brava” and his arrangement of “Amazing Grace.”

Ava Whitman, the new Miss Meridian, introduced the “Amazing Grace” song. “Remember: we could all use a little grace,” she said.

Colby Cummings performed his arrangement of “I Trust in God” with accompaniment by Daniel Yguerabide on piano and Caleb Cummings on drums.

The final number performed by the MHS concert band was “Russian Sailor’s Dance” composed by Rienhold Gliere and arranged by Mark Williams.
