Several employees working for Bosque County started an eight-week, teambased walking program in historic downtown Meridian on Monday, April 1.

The Walk Across Texas program is designed to encourage Texans to improve their health and wellness by establishing a habit of regular physical activity.

The Bosque County Agrilife Extension’s Family & Community Health Committee is leading the local walk, consisting of four teams with approximately 30 participants.

The participants have the flexibility to schedule their own time to walk and log their miles on a daily or weekly basis using an app.

The Bosque County employees launched their first walk on the southside of the Bosque County Courthouse and walked their first mile around the downtown square together.

The Walk Across Texas program began in 1996, and since that time, over 650,000 people have joined up. Year-round participation is highly encouraged.

In 2022, around 11,800 adults across 133 Texas counties participated in the program. These individuals logged 2.59 million miles, averaging 45.6 minutes on average of physical activity. About 58 percent of the participants met the recommenaded level of physical activity, according to Howdy Health.

People interested in the program can form their teams at their office, church, school, senior center, or community.

The program encourages people to form teams with up to eight members who work together to achieve their health and wellness goals.

Each team member’s favorite physical activities are logged as ‘miles walked’ in our online challenge tracker and contribute toward the team’s mileage total.
