Members of Meridian ISD’s Band of Gold competed individually at the Region 8 UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest in Grosebeck on Saturday, February 3.

For the first time in many years, all participating students placed a 1st Division rating in score.

    The students included:

    • Ellie Baker – Trombone.

    • Dawson Cummings – Trombone.

    • Benjamin Beaudin – Tuba.

    • Jackson Boganwright – Bari Sax.

Each performed their own piece with a piano accompaniment, the students put in hours of work to improve their craft. They have one chance to play before a judge and receive critique on the performance of the music “Today’s success is a reflection of the student leadership, their dedication, and direction the program is heading. I consider this a benchmark from tracking real time progress,” MISD band director Daniel Yguerabide said. “This group of kids as well as the band as a whole are living up to new expectations.”

In January, the following Meridian music students made it in the Centex Honor Band: Ben Beaudin, Ellie Baker, Colby Cummings, Hayden Cummings, and Afton Smith.

These student-musicians competed against 2A/3A schools for the opportunity to perform in a band comprised of the best musicians that auditioned.

Meridian was the only 1A school in the competition.
