Merrill tops Canes in baseball playoff

The Hayward Hurricanes baseball team its finished its season in the WIAA regional playoffs Tuesday, May 28.

The Canes lost to the Merrill Bluejays 5-1 in a Division Two regional semifinal playoff at Larry Somerville Field.

The Bluejays scored two runs in the top of the first on a double and a two-run homer.

Merrill added three runs in the second inning on a solo homer, a wild throw on a pickoff attempt, a double, and an RBI single to take a 5-0 lead.

The Canes scored a run in the fifth inning on a single by Micah Bacon, an error allowing Xzavier Stojek to reach first base and an RBI single by Trent Kirkland.

Brady Kanitz was the winning pitcher for Merrill and Nate Harrison took the loss for Hayward.

The Hurricanes finished their season with a 19-5 record. Merrill improved to 13-12. The Bluejays defeated Abbotsford-Colby in the regional championship on May 29.
