Merrillville-based Lakeshore Public Media will host a breakfast Sept. 25 to celebrate the launch of its Building Blocks initiative.

The initiative is a multimedia project exploring the science behind early childhood development. It addresses issues that families face and identifies tools and resources to help give children a healthy start in life.

Attendees will gather in the Mike Anderson Chevrolet Event Center for a complimentary meal. They will have the opportunity to visit vendor tables and hear keynote addresses from station leadership and local experts.

“We are thrilled to launch our Building Blocks project with the Building Blocks Breakfast: Fueling the Future. This event is more than just a meal; it is a powerful gathering of community leaders, experts and families united by a common goal — to lay a strong foundation for our children's future,” said Chuck Roberts, Lakeshore Public Media CEO, in a press release .

Lakeshore Public Media recently received a $100,000 matching grant from the Legacy Foundation. The grant will enable Lakeshore to produce its “Building Blocks” television program. The grant will also fund initiatives that promote high-quality early learning and child development across Northwest Indiana.

“Early learning has become a prominent topic of discussion in many different circles, and Lakeshore has the opportunity to generate widespread impact through the production of ‘Building Blocks,’” said Carl Kurek, Lakeshore Public Media VP of Development.

The “Building Blocks” series premiers in October. The six-episode series will cover brain development, maternal mental health, early intervention and the effects of childhood experiences. Special programming for radio broadcasts and podcast content will be available online. Public events, like Learn with Lakeshore, will engage community members and highlight resources.

The event celebrating the initiative’s launch will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. Sept. 25 at the Dean & Barbara White Community Center in Merrillville. Learn more about the event here .

Lakeshore Public Media operates as Lakeshore Public Radio and Lakeshore PBS. A nonprofit organization, Lakeshore Public Media has been broadcasting since 1987.
