    7 hospitalized from chemical incident at Brimhall Aquatic Center in Mesa

    A chemical incident occurred at the Brimhall Aquatic Complex on the morning of Thursday, June 6, and resulted in seven individuals injured, according to a release from the city of Mesa.

    The incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. and the campus was evacuated while Mesa Fire and Medical Department was called to the scene at 4949 E Southern Ave. to assist with emergency response. The incident was upgraded to a first alarm, which resulted in hazmat officials being called to the scene.

    Five Mesa employees and two program participants were injured during the incident and were treated by paramedics. The victims were transported to local hospitals for additional treatment.

    Mesa Fire and Medical Department crews will remain on the scene working alongside Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. A hazmat disposal company has been brought in to clean the site, it states in the release.

    City officials are investigating the cause of the hazardous situation and the Brimhall campus will remain closed for the time being. The Mesa Parks and Recreation Department camp that operates out of the campus has been relocated to Jefferson Recreation Center, according to the release.
