A chemical incident at Brimhall Aquatic Complex on the morning of June 6 resulted in seven individuals injured, and the pool remains closed June 7 as crews continue the cleanup.

The rest of the Brimhall campus opened June 7 and Mesa Parks and Recreation camp activities resumed at the school. A dine-in movie night scheduled for June 7 was postponed to June 14, according to a release from the city of Mesa.

The chemical incident occurred at around 7:30 a.m. and the campus was evacuated while Mesa Fire and Medical Department was called to the scene at 4949 E. Southern Ave. to assist with emergency response. The incident was upgraded to a first alarm, which resulted in hazmat officials being called to the scene.

Five Mesa employees and two program participants were injured during the incident and were treated by paramedics. The victims were transported to local hospitals for additional treatment.

On June 6 Mesa Fire and Medical Department crews remained on the scene working alongside Arizona Department of Environmental Quality. A hazmat disposal company was brought in to clean the site, it states in the release.
