Embarrass Fair 'last hurrah of summer' for 85 years

EMBARRASS—The Embarrass Region Fair has been a mainstay of the area for 85 years.

The Fair Association credits the beginning with the year 1939.

Festivities are Friday, August 23, through Sunday, August 25.

As is written on the Embarrass Fair website. “Although today’s Fair may look a little different than its predecessors, the spirit of the Fair has remained unchanged; it is the last hurrah of summer and still has the feel of a family reunion.”

Embarrass got its name from French fur traders in the 1700s trying to navigate the twisting river that flows through the area and the French-Canadian lumberjacks who cursed the river when their logs got stuck. They called it Rivière d’Embarras, or “River of Obstacles.” Over the years the name was anglicized to “Embarrass”, and the Finnish immigrants who settled the area around 1900 kept the unorthodox name, according to previous Mesabi Tribune story.

The annual fair celebrates that history and much more, featuring a little bit of everything for everyone including: A mutton busting competition, kids activities, live music, a magic show, a classic car show, and more.

Highlight of Friday’s events is the Little Miss Embarrass coronation. Candidates are Avryl Chamberlin, Brynna Cook, Ava Erickson, Maci Horn and Katie Larson.
