Giants dunk Thunderhawks in the pool

AURORA—The Mesabi East and Grand Rapids girls’ swimming and diving teams split event victories down the middle Tuesday evening, but it was stronger finishes down the line for the Giants that gave them the win over the Thunderhawks in the end, 107-73.

Mesabi East picked up wins in two of three relays and earned individual wins from Aubree Skelton, Kyra Skelton, Olivia Prazek and Ella Larson. Grand Rapids got double wins from Nevaeh Hoard and Lauren Rauzi on the night.

The Giants 200 medley relay team of Summer Kllen, Ashley Fossell and the two Skeltons came out with a victory, stopping their time at 2:02.82. In the 400 freestyle relay, Aubree and Kyra Skelton, Adeline Butzke and Mae Layman earned a win as well with their time of 4:02.99.

Individually, Aubree Skelton captured victory in the 50 freestyle (26.89), Kyra Skelton won the 100 butterfly (1:07.24), Prazak touched first in the 500 freestyle (6:11.43) and Larson came out on top in the 100 backstroke (1:10.12).

Both teams are back in the pool in Aurora Saturday at the Mesabi East-hosted Taconite Invitational.

Northeast Range/Ely 39

BABBITT—The Nighthawks got wins from Anna Larson, Jordan Borchert and the 400 freestyle relay team but it was Two Harbors that came out on top in the pool Tuesday, 53-39.

Larson’s win came in the 100 butterfly where the Northeast Range/Ely swimmer picked up a win by more than 10 seconds with her time of 1:10.74.

Later in the 100 breaststroke, Borchert’s time of 1:29.39 was enough for victory.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Anna Larson, Brynn Larson, Ivy Ohlahuser and Via DeBeltz touched the wall first to finish with a time of 4:25.94.

The Nighthawks earned runner-up finishes from DeBeltz (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Larson (50 freestyle), Alyssa Ice (100 freestyle) and Tuuli Koivisto (1:32.80) as well.

Northeast Range/Ely is back in the pool on Thursday when they host Stella Maris.
