Metamora’s Cam Nickel hoping recruiting interest increases

METAMORA, Ill. (WMBD/WYZZ) — Cam Nickel knows Matthew Zobrist well and was excited to hear his friend made a commitment to play basketball at Bradley on Tuesday.

Now Nickel hopes he’s the next Metamora Redbird getting a Division I scholarship offer.

Interest in the senior linebacker is on the rise as Nickel enters his senior year of high school football. He’s received his first Div. I offer from Army this spring and also has offers from Division II schools Northwest Missouri State and Grand Valley State.

Last month he made a visit to the University of Illinois where the Illini worked him out as an edge rusher.

“Some of the camps I’ve been going to had me at edge rush. They say they could see me there or at linebacker, depending on their personnel,” said Nickel. “We’ll just see hope it goes. I want an opportunity to play at the next level.”

Nickel says he’s added 15 pounds to his 6-foot-3 frame since last season. He says he’d like to play at 225 pounds this fall which would mean he’d need another ten pounds of weight.

“He is still scratching the surface with some Division I schools,” said Metamora head coach Jared Grebner. “And he still has a lot of interest.”
