Jamie Farr Park Pool closed for the rest of the season
Mechanical issues have closed the Jamie Farr Park pool for the rest of the season, the city of Toledo announced Tuesday. “Knowing that this was likely the last year of operation for the current pool facility, the city has already allocated funding and started planning for a new aquatic facility at Jamie Farr Park,” the city said in a written statement. In the meantime, pool-goers are encouraged to visit other city pools or the Savage Park splash pad. Open city pools are: Roosevelt Pool, 910 Dorr St.; Willys Pool, 1375 Hillcrest Ave.; Navarre Pool, 1001 White St.; Pickford Pool, 3000 Medford Dr.; and Wilson Pool, 3253 Otto St. City youth aged 6 to 19 can use digital bus passes for convenience. Both the judges and the general public voted for repeat favorites in this year’s 40th edition of The Blade’s Northwest Ohio Rib Off. Porky Chicks BBQ, based in Fayetteville, Ark., won the judges’ choice top prize for the fourth year in a row and fifth time overall, with the non-consecutive victory having been in 2015. And O’Henrys Kitchen on Wheels, a Toledo-based food truck run by Keith Henry, took home the people’s choice award for the second straight year. Popular Mexican food truck plans expansion; feedback on locations sought
Tacos El Junior, a widely popular food truck based at 1107 Broadway St. in South Toledo, will soon become two trucks. Owner Jose Merino, known as “Junior,” announced the second truck on Facebook on Sunday. “Thank you to everyone Tacos El Junior #2 will be opening very soon,” Mr. Merino wrote. “If you have any recommendations on where we should park everyday please let us know. Stay in the south end or go to another side of Toledo?” “The comments have been coming in and so far, many people, 90 percent, think the truck should be in West Toledo,” Mr. Merino said. “I am still looking at the comments and deciding. Also, if people have suggestions concerning new food items they would like to see, they can post that as well. I have three weeks yet before the truck is inspected, so there is time to make a decision.”

Art on the Mall showcases craftsmanship and creativity in Toledo
The University of Toledo’s Centennial Mall burgeoned Sunday for the 31st year with small tents — each one providing a shady refuge and intimate insight into a unique artistic world. Michelle Opaczewski, a Toledo native, started crocheting over 40 years ago when she was just 12 years old. “It’s my sanity,” she said, a smile sprouting from her lips. Her tent was one of 121 featured at Art on the Mall, the annual Toledo art show. The event featured artists from across the country and showed off artworks including photography, jewelry, painting, metallurgy, ceramics, and more — all for sale at individual artists’ booths.
