Tropical summer conditions in the East, tropical system approaches Florida late in the weekend

    2024-07-30

Yesterday's upper air storm system and associated surface low has now moved away to the northeast into Canada. What we are left with are very warm and humid conditions that will last all week long and into the weekend. To the west we have an upper air disturbance moving eastward. Until it arrives we will have some sunshine and highs will reach the middle to upper 80s. Late in the day some thunderstorms will probably develop though the best chances seem to be for areas inland and west of the coast.

The risk for downpours or a thunderstorm will continue overnight as the upper air disturbance moves from west to east so it is possible that if you don't see any rain through this evening you might see it overnight. Wednesday is going to be another very warm and very humid day with some sunshine and highs in the mid to upper 80s.

Wednesday's thunderstorm risk is likely to be more to the north rather than to the west and south so if you are north of NYC into New England you stand the best chances. Thursday looks to be the one day where downpour or thunderstorm risk is on the low side and for most of you it will be a rain free day. Sunshine will likely take highs to the upper 80s to around 90 degrees or so in some places.

Another disturbance will approach Friday so after a day of some sunshine and highs up close to 90 degrees, thunderstorms will likely develop in the late afternoon and evening. The weekend likely see the higher chance for showers and thunderstorms later Saturday as a slow moving cold front approaches and stalls. This may also be a day of severe weather risk. The stalled front lingers into Sunday and that probably means there will be some downpours and thunderstorms around.

Later in the weekend a tropical wave will be approaching South Florida. The National Hurricane Center addresses this wave in their latest outlook. They see a 60 percent chance that this system develops into a tropical cyclone of some sort. The stalled front might provide an alley way for moisture from this system to funnel up the East Coast of the US early next week but there is much uncertainty about what kind of system this will be or whether it develops at all. As far as a break from the very warm and humid conditions are concerned, that may not happen for another 8 or 9 days at the earliest.
