Best weather of the summer Southern New England to Mid Atlantic, humidity & storms next week

    2024-08-22

We had another cool morning across the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states as temperatures bottomed in the upper 40s and lower 50s. An upper air storm system is slowly pulling away through New England and Southeastern Canada which leaves us in a more stable atmosphere today. Scattered showers are well to the north in Northern New England and we don't not have any scattered shower issues today in Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. This leaves us in a sweet spot today as satellite loops show mainly sunny skies from South Central New England southward into the Carolinas. Look for sunny skies all day long with nothing more than a few passing fair weather clouds. High temperatures this afternoon will generally be in the low to mid 70s.

The core of this cool air mass will begin to slide to the south and east today as high pressure begins to settle off the Mid Atlantic coast. Skies will be clear tonight. Urban areas will bottom in the low 60s with 50s everywhere else and 40s in the coolest spots. Friday will be a sunny day and temperatures will start to move higher. Highs will reach the mid 70s to around 80 degrees.

The weekend is looking to be a good one across much of the Eastern US as high pressure settles offshore. We will continue to see humidity levels remaining reasonable through the weekend though dew points will be rising somewhat. Oppressive humidity is not in the cards for this weekend. Both Saturday and Sunday will be partly to mostly sunny. Temperatures are heading higher with low to mid 80s forecast for Saturday and mid to upper 80s forecast for Sunday.

A weak upper trough dropping southeast from Eastern Canada Sunday night could set off an overnight shower or thunderstorm but a stronger upper trough will be approaching Monday. Ahead of it will be very warm and more humid as highs will reach the mid to upper 80s. The trough is likely to set of showers and thunderstorms late in the day Monday into Monday evening and we do see some severe weather risk potential here. It looks to be very warm and humid all of next week but shower and thunderstorm risk will be low after Monday night's trough passes through.
