Coastal flooding high tides New England to Virginia, heavy rain SE New England, nice weather inland

Rain continues in Southeastern New England today as low pressure remains well offshore to the southeast. It remains far enough east that most of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England enjoys another day of no worse than partly sunny skies, once any low clouds and fog burn off. The onshore flow continues but the air overhead is warm and stable. High temperatures this afternoon will reach the upper 70s to around 80 inland while coastal areas will be a bit lower thanks to the ocean wind. The long duration onshore flow and the high tides from the full moon a few days ago continues to produce coastal flooding from Eastern New England to Southern New England and Long Island south to Eastern Virginia. You can expect coastal flooding issues to continue through the weekend. Tonight will be warm and humid with low clouds and patchy fog. Most lows will be in the 60s. Saturday we see more in the way of cloud cover though there will be some sun in the mix. The offshore low is going to start dropping southward. To the west we have an upper trough that will be dropping southward from Eastern Canada. This will produce some showers and maybe in a scattered thunderstorm or two in Pennsylvania and most of that slides south and east. Southern New Jersey and Southeast Pennsylvania could see some showers late Saturday or Saturday night but everyone else will be dry.

Sunday we begin to see the next high building southwestward from Northeastern Canada. This is going to keep the onshore flow in place. It will also start to filter down slightly drier air as dew points fall. Temperatures are going to be a bit cooler as a result. Clouds Sunday morning will give way to sunshine. Most high temperatures will be in the low to middle 70s with 60s along the coast.

The blocking pattern that has been holding in the Eastern US & Eastern Canada is finally going to break down. This is going to begin to allow weather systems to resume their normal west to east progression. We also will likely see a tropical depression or a tropical storm form in the Northwest Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico later next week. That is hanging out in the long range and while some model runs want to eventually sling shot that moisture to the East Coast there is a lot of uncertainty about this.

What we do know is that next week will start out dry for Monday and probably Tuesday. A cold front could bring the risk for showers or thunderstorms Wednesday. Next week we see the start of Autumn and temperatures will likely close to average. The onshore flow will break down by midweek as weather systems start moving along. Enjoy your weekend as summer 2024 comes to an end.
