Growth among Miami's 65-and-up population far outpaced that of other age groups between 2020 and 2023, according to the latest Census Bureau estimates.

Why it matters: Cities with growing senior populations must be mindful of older residents' specific needs, like health care, transportation and affordable housing.

The big picture: The trend reflects a broader national phenomenon, with America's overall 65-plus population rising 9.4%, to about 59.2 million people in this time frame, according to the Census Bureau.

    • That age group grew in all of America's biggest cities from 2020 to 2023 — by close to 20% in some cases, per the latest estimates.

By the numbers: Miami's 65-and-up population grew about 7.5% from 2020-2023, to more than 1.22 million, per Census data.

    • The 15-to-24 age group grew by 1.6%, from nearly 688,300 to just shy of 1 million.
    • All other age groups shrank.

Zoom out: Overall, Miami's population grew slightly by 0.7% in the three-year time period.
