Author of one of the most electric moments in recent Miami Dolphins history announces his retirement

Former Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake is hanging them up.

The veteran running back announced on his Instagram account on Friday that he's retiring from the NFL.

Drake isn't going to go down in Miami Dolphins lore as one of the most accomplished players in franchise history.  However, sports are often so much more about long-term accomplishments.  Every now and then, sports give us moments that live on about as big as anything.

That happened with Drake and the Dolphins back on December 9, 2018 inside Hard Rock Stadium.  Miami trailed New England 33-28 with just seven seconds left and the Dolphins with their ball at their own 31-yard line.

Every Miami fan knows what happened next.

Kenny Stills took in Ryan Tannehill's pass and was surrounded by New England defenders.  With nowhere to go, he tossed it to Devante Parker, who cut towards the sideline.  Parker tossed it to Drake in stride, who burst past midfield.

However, I refer to Drake as the "author" of the play as what he did next was quite extraordinary.  He held the ball out as if he was going to toss it again, but he cut back and around a huge block by guard Ted Karras on safety Patrick Chung.  That sprung him and he curled up and around a flat-footed Rob Gronkowski towards the corner for the game-winning points.

A truly incredible individual effort from Drake - with a big assist to Tannehill, Stills, Parker, and Karras.

The Miracle in Miami is a moment Miami fans will cherish for a very long time.  Sure, the Dolphins faltered down the stretch and missed the playoffs.  And of course, New England would go on to win another Super Bowl.

But for one thrilling afternoon inside Hard Rock Stadium, none of that mattered.  Like when Kevin Costner finally knocked in the ball on the 72nd hole of the US Open for a 12 in the movie Tin Cup and the crowd lost their mind with excitement.  Rene Russo gleefully exclaimed, "everyone's going to remember your twelve!"

That was the moment for the Dolphins and Drake in 2018.  And it's one Miami fans won't forget anytime soon.
