Straddling the border between Liberty City and Hialeah, Brownsville only started appearing on city maps around 100 years ago. While first established as a white residential subdivision of Miami, Brownsville quickly became one of Miami’s most prominent Black neighborhoods. The Historic Hampton House on 27th Avenue still hums with the voices of Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, and other remarkable artists who performed there. And Brownsville is still humming today—particularly with food. Below you'll find some great spots serving seafood, soul food, Cuban classics, and a lot more.

    THE SPOTS

    Cod Seafood

    $$$$Perfect For:Walk-InsLunch

This spot doubles as a fish market and restaurant, so you can order premade meals like fried shrimp or snapper with two sides, and also leave with fresh seafood by the pound. If you’re looking for a deal, they have $10 specials every day until 3pm on dishes like seafood pasta, fried snapper, or seafood fried rice. There’s also free parking out front in case you're in a rush.

    Heads Or Tails Seafood

    $$$$Perfect For:Walk-Ins

When you step into Heads or Tails, the first things you’ll notice are the restaurant’s ocean-colored walls and those plastic folding chairs you find at every summer barbecue. They’ve got everything from conch and jumbo shrimp platters to soft hush puppies you should add on as a side to whatever you get. If you’re in the mood for ceviche or soup, they’ve got a bunch to choose from. Depending on the day's specials, you can expect cream of seafood, conch, lobster, and more.

    Mojo Grille

    $$$$Perfect For:Walk-InsSerious Takeout Operation

While Brownsville is well-known for soul food, the neighborhood also has its fair share of good Latin restaurants like Mojo Grille. Order "papi’s picadillo" here, one of six bowls on the menu. It comes with a main portion of savory picadillo mixed with roasted potatoes and olives. Paired with rice, beans, plantains, and your choice of sauce, this dish is a solid lunch or casual dinner option. They also have six different sandwiches or wings if you're not in a bowl mood.

    Brother And Sisters BBQ Pit

    $$$$Perfect For:Walk-InsOutdoor/Patio SituationSerious Takeout Operation

Brother and Sisters BBQ Pit is an outdoor restaurant where you sit on picnic tables covered in graffiti and dig into a big pile of collard greens, wings, and ribs. The chefs here know barbecue. We like their BBQ chicken or rib sandwiches, but it's also not a bad idea to forego the bread and save your stomach space for meat. Go for a half rack drizzled in sauce.

    Mercedes Coffee Shop

    $$$$Perfect For:Walk-InsBreakfast

Mercedes Coffee Shop looks like any of the other warehouses lining 54th Street on the edge of Brownsville and Hialeah. But the cafe con leche is worth stopping for—as is the rest of the classic Cuban dishes. This place opens before the sun rises, so it’s the perfect place to grab breakfast before work. Mercedes opens at 5am on weekdays, and also has a drive-thru if you're running too late to put the car in park. They also serve traditional American breakfast foods like scrambled eggs and toast, coffee, and juice.

World Famous Ribs & Seafood II

    $$$$Perfect For:Walk-InsSerious Takeout Operation

World Famous Ribs & Seafood is so good, they had to add a second location a few blocks southwest of their original location. This place does just what the name suggests: great ribs and seafood dishes. They also offer different daily specials Tuesday through Saturday. The regular menu here is pretty big, and eating through their full selection of sandwiches, seafood entrees, gizzards, and wings would require seven stomachs.

    Our Papa’s Kitchen

    $$$$Perfect For:Walk-InsSerious Takeout Operation

While you could debate about whether this place is located in Liberty City or Brownsville, there’s no confusion about how good the soul food here is. The combo meals are packed with your choice of protein, rice, and two sides. Options include oxtail, turkey wings, pork chops, chicken and waffles, and lots more. Just don't plan on eating here—it's an entirely takeout operation.

    Victoria’s Restaurant And Catering

    $$$$Perfect For:Walk-InsBreakfast

Victoria’s Restaurant is an easy breakfast spot not because the food will blow you away, but because of how quick the service is. They offer traditional Latin breakfast items like tostadas, pastelitos, and croquetas, which you can pair with a strong coffee. Plus, they open at 6am, so you can swing by and get your caffeine fix before you face your inbox.
