'Can't tell the players without a program': Marlins a completely different team after trade-deadline frenzy

Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Peter Bendix.

It's difficult to believe that the Miami Marlins were in the postseason last year.

The Marlins have had a lot of turnover since. Kim Ng stepped down as the Marlins general manager after ownership wanted to add someone above her as the primary decision maker. Peter Bendix was hired as the Marlins' president of baseball operations just over a month later.

Bendix began the teardown almost immediately. A quiet offseason was a precursor to the Marlins' plans. Second baseman Luis Arraez was sent to the Padres on May 4, with a trio of prospects and the since-released Woo-Suk Go being sent to Miami.

The fireworks began on July 25 when reliever A.J. Puk was sent to the Diamondbacks. Outfielder Jazz Chisholm was next, traded to the Yankees on Saturday. Then the trade deadline happened. The Marlins traded first baseman Josh Bell, outfielder Bryan De La Cruz, starting pitcher Trevor Rogers and relievers Tanner Scott, Bryan Hoeing, JT Chargois and Huascar Brazoban. In exchange, the Marlins received 15 players and just over $2 million in cash.

The Marlins needed to restock their farm system , which had been regarded as one of the worst in baseball heading into the season. The trade for Scott and Hoeing alone, where the Marlins received three of the Padres' top five prospects, will make an impact. Connor Norby is the type of player the Marlins need. The rebuild was sudden, explosive and dramatic.

The Marlins are also going to be a vastly different team than what took the diamond on Monday. The old saying of "can't tell the players without a program" is the case here after a flurry of activity at the trade deadline.
