A man broke into his mom’s house by crawling through the doggy door, then he stabbed her to death, Florida authorities said.

After a 24-hour manhunt, John Aylor, 37, was arrested in the death of 64-year-old Julie Aylor, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced.

Shortly before 4:30 a.m. Aug. 12, Aylor broke into his mom’s house to steal from her while his 10-year-old daughter was at the home, Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a news conference.

He crawled through the dog door, armed himself with a kitchen knife and went to his mom’s bedroom, where the two began to argue, Chronister said.

The son is accused of stabbing his mom in the chest during the argument.

A 16-year-old living in the Brandon home called 911, but by the time first responders arrived, the woman had died and the son had fled the scene, according to the sheriff.

Deputies put out a call for help finding Aylor, and at about 4 a.m. Aug. 13, someone called the sheriff’s office to report seeing Aylor, deputies said.

He was taken into custody and booked in Hillsborough County jail.

Aylor had a history of more than two dozen theft and drug-related charges, Chronister said.

Hillsborough County has seen 14 family-related homicides in 2024, compared to 16 in 2023, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Family violence is a silent crime,” Chronister said, adding, “Ask for help before it’s too late.”

Brandon is part of the Tampa metropolitan area.
