A 19-year-old is charged with vehicular homicide after deputies say he was driving a Tesla at an “excessive speed” last weekend before the car collided with another at a South Florida intersection — killing two and hospitalizing three others.

Then on Wednesday, a new twist emerged: two Broward deputies have been reassigned as an investigation begins into whether they were involved in a possible high speed chase with the teen prior to the deadly crash.

Gavin Dorvil, 19, is facing two counts of vehicular homicide and a charge of reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said. Though it’s unclear if Dorvil has been placed or is still in Broward County Jail.

The crash occurred Sunday at the intersection of Northwest 27th Avenue and Sixth Street in Broward, just outside Fort Lauderdale.

Just before 2:30 p.m., the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Dorvil was driving his 2023 Tesla Model 3 “at a high rate of speed” and slammed into a 2023 Dodge Durango crossing through the intersection. The Durango then hit a 2024 Chevrolet Trax, driven by Jasmyne Thomas, that rolled over onto its roof.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue took five people to Broward Health Medical Center — two people, identified as Lisa Jackson and Geraldine Francis, were pronounced dead. Jackson was driving the Durango and Francis was a passenger. A juvenile also in the Durango is in critical condition.

Dorvil was among those taken to the hospital, where he was later arrested Tuesday night.

While detectives have so far determined “excessive speed” was a factor in the crash, the sheriff’s office is also investigating whether its deputies were involved.

Internal Affairs is working to determine if any deputies were pursuing the Tesla before the crash, the sheriff’s office said.

As of Wednesday evening, two deputies have been placed on restricted administrative assignment.
