Three Miami officers fatally shoot a wanted man in Liberty City, police say

A wanted, convicted felon was gunned down by three Miami officers in Liberty City on Tuesday afternoon, police said. A few days earlier, the man had fired off nearly a dozen gunshots in the neighborhood.

Shortly before 4:30 p.m., Miami police’s tactical robbery unit monitored a wanted suspect in Northwest 57th Avenue and 67th Street, Police Chief Manuel Morales said. The unidentified man, who is a convicted felon, had fired a gun 10 to 12 times nearby on Sunday night.

When the man walked out of a convenience store, officers “made contact” with him, Morales said. He ran and officers chased after him. Behind a nearby apartment complex, a confrontation occurred, culminating with three officers shooting the man.

It’s unclear if the man attacked or motioned to harm the officers, but Morales said he did have a gun. Shot several times, he was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

While the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates, the three officers were placed on administrative reassignment.

Morales emphasized the investigation that led to the shooting was part of his strategic plan to reduce gun violence.

“Every incident where a firearm is discharged in the City of Miami limits is investigated,” he said. “...We identify the offenders that are out there causing harm to our community and threatening the safety of our residents. Unfortunately, in this case, someone lost their life.”
