Scared dog spent weeks running along highways near airport. Then rescuers stepped in

A Jack Russell terrier is safe after he spent several weeks running along busy highways by a New Jersey airport, dodging rescuers’ attempts to catch him, an animal shelter says.

Following “constant and terrifying” reports about sightings of the small dog, he was rescued by a professional trapper near the Newark Liberty International Airport, about a 15-mile drive southwest of New York City, the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge wrote Sept. 10 on Facebook.

The dog, believed to be under a year old, was named “Monkey” by Buddha Dog Rescue & Recovery, the nonprofit organization that saved him.

It “is a true miracle that Monkey survived,” the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge said.

“Even more unexpectedly, it only took minutes for this adorable dog to warm up to human touch, despite evading rescuers for so long,” the shelter wrote.

The pup was possibly dumped outside before he was spotted roaming highways, according to the shelter.

Now he’s healing at the shelter, where he was treated for fleas, ticks, parasites and was given vaccines, the shelter said.

Monkey is learning to walk on a leash, getting along with other dogs and is warming up to people, according to the shelter.

“After a period of decompression, we are working with Monkey to overcome his fears ,” the shelter wrote in a Sept. 11 post showing a video of the pup being fed a treat.

At some point, Monkey will need a home, according to the shelter.

“He is doing great with his daily rehabilitation sessions — so curious and treat motivated. Consistent training and socialization support will help Monkey become more comfortable, and ultimately help him to find a home of his own,” the shelter said.
