Veteran appears unfazed by hefty lottery win. ‘You’ve got to do a lot to excite me’

A U.S. Army veteran won a big prize after buying a scratch-off ticket but had an unconventional reaction, his daughter told the Maryland Lottery.

The man unknowingly bought a winning Money Rush scratch-off ticket at a Walmart in Glen Burnie, according to a news release. Then, he got the news that he had won the second-tier prize: $50,000.

His youngest daughter told lottery officials that her dad’s response was “deadpan” when he heard the news, the release said.

The man explained that he’s just not the most exuberant when it comes to money.

“You’ve got to do a lot to excite me, and money is not one of the things that excites me,” he told lottery officials.

In fact, for a long time, playing the lottery at all was out of his orbit.

“I didn’t get into the Lottery until after I retired from the service,” he said.

For years, he was stationed in Oklahoma, where there wasn’t a lottery at the time. While he could still play cards, gambling of any kind was discouraged by the military.

Now, he buys tickets with spare cash he has, just for fun.

“I just like doing it,” he said.

For this prize, the man revealed he hadn’t yet “given it much thought” but that he’d share the winnings with his four children.

Glen Burnie is about a 10-mile drive south of Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
