Buckle up, South Florida. Voting begins in Miami-Dade and Broward this week.

The first ballots of the November general election will go out to voters in Miami-Dade and Broward counties this week as South Florida enters the final stretch leading up to Election Day.

The Miami-Dade Elections Department is set to send out roughly 260,000 mail ballots on Monday to voters who have already requested one. In Broward, the first domestic vote-by-mail ballots — more than 230,000 of them — will go out on Tuesday, according to the county’s elections department.

While mail ballots were sent to overseas voters earlier this month, the coming deluge of domestic mail ballots will mark the official beginning of election season in South Florida, a roughly six-week stretch of voting, campaigning and organizing that will culminate with Election Day on Nov. 5.

At the top of the ballot is the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, who are vying to succeed President Joe Biden in the White House.

But voters will also have the chance to weigh in on a handful of other important races. Republican U.S. Sen. Rick Scott is seeking a second term in the Senate, and faces a challenge from Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, who previously represented a South Florida congressional district until losing reelection to U.S. Rep. Carlos Gimenez in 2020.

There’s also a handful of offices on the ballot that Miami-Dade and Broward residents have never voted on before. In Miami-Dade, voters will choose their county sheriff, tax collector and supervisor of elections. Those offices previously fell under the purview of the county mayor.

Broward voters will have the chance to choose their tax collector — a job that previously fell under the county government’s responsibility.

Voters who want to vote by mail, but haven’t requested a ballot yet, will have until 5 p.m. on Oct. 24 to do so. For those who aren’t registered to vote, the deadline to do so for the November election is Oct. 7 by 11:59 p.m.

There’s still the option to vote early in person. Both Miami-Dade and Broward County will open up their early voting sites on Oct. 21, and voters will have until Nov. 3 to cast their ballots at an early voting center ahead of Election Day.
