Elusive creature spotted on golf course in South Africa, ‘very rare’ video shows

At a golf course in South Africa, an elusive creature emerged from the trees — perhaps lured out by a possible meal — and set off along the path. A video shows the “very rare sighting.”

Izak Nel was at the golf course and resort in Mossel Bay when they spotted a caracal meandering along the edge of the green, Pinnacle Point Estate wrote in a Sept. 25 Facebook post.

Caracals are a species of small cat found across Africa and West Asia recognizable by their tufted ears, according to Panthera, an organization dedicated to protecting wild cats. They are “extraordinary hunters” capable of leaping over 14 feet into the air to catch birds mid-flight.

“A very rare sighting of a caracal (or rooikat) was recently filmed on our golf course,” the resort wrote. “Like most other solitary wild cats, this beautiful cat prefers to be elusive and unnoticed by humans, which makes this video special.”

The video shows the caracal walking along a sandy path at the edge of the course. It stops a few times to look around before hurrying out of sight.

“The wildlife on the Estate is thriving!” the resort added.

“Fantastic, didn’t realise we had caracals in the estate,” a Facebook user commented.

Mossel Bay is a town along the southern coast of South Africa and a roughly 750-mile drive southwest of Johannesburg.
