Meteorologist hears screams from Helene floodwaters and rushes to save GA woman, video shows

Not all heroes wear capes. Sometimes they have a microphone and an earpiece.

That was the case for FOX Meteorologist Bob Van Dillen as he reported live Friday, Sept. 27, from a flooded Atlanta-area neighborhood hit hard by Hurricane Helene.

His live shot in Georgia turned into a rescue mission as he raced to save a woman trapped in her car, videos show.

Van Dillen was covering the storm’s aftermath when he heard the woman’s cries for help, FOX Weather reported. She accidentally drove into the rising floodwaters and became stuck.

“There’s so many high-water rescues and we’ve already documented so far,” Van Dillen told “Fox and Friends,” recalling the dramatic scene.

“You could hear her screaming, right? You could hear it during my live shot, real loud. And so I just … dropped everything and I took my wallet outta my pants and went in there, waded in.”

Van Dillen said he called 911 before springing into action. The woman was still buckled in her seat as the water rose quickly around her, leaving her “almost neck deep,” he said.

Helene made landfall as a monstrous Category 4 storm in Florida’s Big Bend region on Thursday and pushed its way into Georgia, bringing intense wind, rain and life-threatening flooding to the Peach State.

Parts of Atlanta saw record-breaking rainfall — nearly a foot of rain in the span of 48 hours, according to the Georgia Climate Office. It’s the highest two-day total the city has seen in 138 years.

Video from the rescue shows Van Dillen wading through murky, chest-deep water to rescue the woman, who wasn’t publicly identified. With the woman hitched on his back, the meteorologist walked them both back to safety.

“About 10 minutes later, the fire department came, saw that we were OK and went off to the next rescue, wherever they’re going,” he recalled.

Van Dillen said the woman’s husband came and picked her up soon afterward.

“She’s all good,” he told FOX Weather. “But the story now turns not on me, but it turns to how much flooding we’ve seen. I mean … amazing amounts coming in.”

News of his heroic act was met with praise from his colleagues and viewers alike.

“God Bless You!! You risked your life to save this woman! Thank you!” a viewer commented on the “Fox and Friends” video.

“Watched it live! Great selfless act!” wrote another. “What he did was amazing, and he is an everyday hero.”

The woman’s condition wasn’t known as of Friday afternoon.

I could NEVER understand how someone could drive a vehicle KNOWING a major, MAJOR storm is flooding the area. Stupid & ignorant.
