Fly in the sugar. Unsafe goat. Rodents. Miami, Broward and Palm Beach restaurant filth

After a week focusing on the mall food court shut down by rodent regularity, we’re back with a full Sick and Shut Down List of restaurant inspection failures in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach.

Before we get to the list, a reminder —we don’t choose who gets inspected by the state. We don’t do the inspections. We’re reporting the results of the inspections. If you have a problem with a place, don’t send your complaint to us. Holler at the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

All places passed re-inspection the next day.

    In alphabetical order...

Abaneros Mexican Restaurant, food truck, 5060 Seminiole Pratt Whitney Rd., Westlake: Routine inspection, 10 total violations, 7 High Priority violations.

Being a food truck doesn’t mean you can operate with “no functional handwash facility” or “no functional ware washing facility.”

“Employee handled raw pork then handled clean pots of food on stove” without washing hands. Then again, “No handwashing facility available to wash hands.”

“Employee came from outside the food truck, then touched the ice scoop to get ice” without washing hands. Then again, “no potable running water available to wash hands.”

The cooked pork ribs sitting on the stovetop needed to be cooled to 70 degrees two hours after cooking, but measured 94 degrees. After being in the cooler all night, the cooked beans in the cooler needed to be down to 41 degrees. They were at 47. Same with the red salsa (48) and green salsa with cooked peppers (50) in another cooler.

The inspector brought Stop Sale doom to them all.

“Soiled, dry wiping cloth in use and stored on a clean cutting board.”

Caribbean Breeze Grill & Restaurant, 12936 NW Seventh Ave., North Miami: Routine inspection, 10 total violations, one High Priority violation.

About 10 roaches gathered in the kitchen between the reach-in cooler and a prep table. Perhaps they were mourning the four dead roaches under the prep table.

“No paper towels at the kitchen area handwash sink.”

“Interior of oven/microwave has an accumulation of black substance/grease/food debris.”

“Floor soiled/has an accumulation of debris” as in “grease under cooking equipment.”

Though the Breeze passed the next day’s callback inspection, it did so with “Follow Up Inspection Required.”

Derry’s Family Restaurant, 6569 Pembroke Rd., Hollywood: Routine inspection, 14 total violations, four High Priority violations.

You knew we couldn’t go too deeply into the list without an “accumulation of black/green mold-like substance in the interior of the ice machine.”

Derry’s got in hot water for not having hot water. None at the three-compartment sink. None at the mop sink. Not hot enough (at least 85 degrees) a the employee handwash sink.

The handwash sink didn’t have any soap, either.

This didn’t bother the rodents who left 11 pieces of poo on a can of gravy in dry storage and another two under a dry storage rack.

Flies landed on kitchen walls, buzzed the garbage can and one “landed in an opened container of sugar in the kitchen.”

A shelf with clean dishes was described as “soiled,” the same adjective applied to the stove top, the shelf under the prep table, the shelf under the steamer and the hood.

Dutch Pot Jamaican Restaurant, 111 N. State Road 7, Plantation: Routine inspection, seven total violations, six High Priority violations.

“Nothing from nothing” describes the dish sanitizer — zero parts per million. Meanwhile, the wiping cloth sanitizer, which should be 100 ppm, was only 50, half-stepping on the sanitizing.

Four live roaches crawled on a wall under a prep sink next to a kitchen prep table. Another three were on a wall leading to the water heater room.

The Pot didn’t know how to be cool when it came to food fixed the day before. Curried goat, raw pork and red peas remained too warm after being made on the previous day or days. Stop Sales came down on all.

Hoagie Hut Cafe, 11011 NW 27th Ave., North Miami-Dade: Complaint inspection, four total violations, one High Priority violation.

We detailed some of The Hut’s vermin and cleanliness problems last week.

Joe’s Wood Grill, 1504 S. Federal Hwy., Dania Beach: Routine inspection, 11 total violations, two High Priority violations.

Rodents wishing to eat at Joe’s left poop under a kitchen handwash sink, under a cookline prep table, by a walk-in cooler door (three in each spot), next to the ice machine (10 pieces) and next to a storage shelf (eight pieces).

Joe’s had single-serve forks, spoons and knives on the floor of the storage room.

No way to wash or dry hands at the kitchen handwash sink (no soap, no towels, no hand blower.

Dry storage seemed pretty wet with “floor area(s) covered with standing water.”

Riviere South Beach, 1424 Collins Ave., Miami Beach: Routine inspection, 11 total violations, two High Priority violations.

Restaurants have to have a dishwasher that sanitizes or a three-compartment sink for manual washing, rinsing and sanitizing. Riviere had neither.

“No dishwashing facilities of any kind provided. The triple sink was removed and a single-compartment utility sink was installed. The front desk agent was washing plates, coffee mugs, bowls, spoons, knives, and forks in the single-compartment utility sink.”

“Only use single-service items to serve food to customers until sanitizer is available for warewashing.”

“Server handled soiled dishes or utensils, then picked up plated food, served food, or prepared a beverage without washing hands.”

The Riviere got back open Friday with a “Follow-Up Inspection Required.”
