A missing 5-year-old boy was found dead in a pond after police say he wandered away from his home.

Around 11 a.m. Oct. 13, officers were called to a home in Waldorf, Maryland. It was reported that Miles McMahon, who had autism and was non-verbal, wandered away from home, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.

Miles was seen on home security footage “skipping in his front yard” when he left the house, officials said. Family members looked for him but couldn’t find him, so they called 911.

“Officers established a perimeter and immediately focused their attention on ponds and bodies of water nearby,” officials said.

Multiple agencies began searching for Miles, using drones, bloodhounds and specialized apps for tracking.

Around 12:45 a.m. the next morning, officials released an update notifying the public that Miles had been found.

“Unfortunately, he was located in a pond, not too far from his house a short time ago and was deceased,” the update said.

Officials said the pond was the primary focus while they were searching for Miles and had been searched earlier in the day. When search teams returned to check the pond again, they found Miles.

“Now, all of our hearts are with the McMahon family as they endure this unimaginable loss and overwhelming grief,” a Facebook post from the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said.
