1 dead, 8 injured in Broward crash on Florida Turnpike during rush hour, officials say

A major crash on the Florida Turnpike in Davie has left one person dead and eight others injured, including three children, officials said. Traffic is mounting Tuesday afternoon as authorities shut down the Turnpike to investigate.

Around 2:30 p.m., a passenger van and semi-tractor trailer collided in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike near Griffin Road in Davie, the Florida Highway Patrol said. A woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Davie Fire Rescue confirmed eight others suffered injuries. An adult was airlifted to Broward Medical Center and the other seven patients were taken by ambulance to Memorial Regional Hospital. One of the children was infant, FHP said.

In total, three children and five adults are being treated.

The Florida Highway Patrol did not immediately respond with information on the crash. As of 4:30 p.m., all southbound lanes were still closed near the Griffin Road exit. Traffic is being diverted to US 441.
