A 64-year-old man died from his injuries after he was struck by a public transit bus on his birthday, Florida police say.

The crash happened just before 11:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, on 22nd Avenue North near the Pinellas Trail in St. Petersburg, the city’s police department said in a news release.

Authorities said a Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus carrying 10 passengers approached the trail crosswalk , but didn’t stop for passing pedestrians.

Before the collision, a pedestrian activated the crosswalk signal and began to cross, officers said.

The 64-year-old, who was on a motorized scooter, entered the crosswalk at about the same time and tried to cross when he was struck by the PSTA bus, police said in the release.

The man was taken to a hospital where he died. Authorities haven’t released his name, pending notification of his family, but confirmed he turned 64 on Tuesday.

No other injuries were reported, police said.

Authorities haven’t said if the bus driver, 53, will be charged. An investigation is ongoing.

St. Petersburg is about a 20-mile drive southwest from Tampa.
