A list of the companies used by a Florida mover with a record of fraud and extortion

Florida mover Shawn Thompson has a list of problems.

One judgment against him in Miami-Dade for extorting and defrauding a moving customer. A final judgment coming in Orange County for the same thing. The subject of 38 complaints to the Florida Attorney General’s office, and 98 complaints to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Reddit and Better Business Bureau pages teem with customers raging about low estimates, followed by extra unapproved charges, then a large cash payment demanded on delivery as the customer’s possessions are held hostage.

So with all of this, how do Thompson’s companies continue to get customers?

No state agency has taken action against Thompson.

Thompson opens, closes and reinstates a cornucopia of companies on paper, often using names resembling companies with better reputations. This also spreads bad online reviews over several entities. The companies’ paperwork, including legal fictitious names, obscure their links to each other and Thompson.

Unless a potential customer takes online research beyond a normal dive into Google or Safari, Thompson’s companies can be camouflaged among more reputable movers. Also, few people slogging through a big move know to check the U.S. Department of Transportation site to see if the moving company has the credentials to do what they need.

Keyla Garcia used We Move You/Green Go Moving to move from Coral Springs to Savannah, Georgia, in August. The estimate, which Garcia emailed to the Miami Herald, said the company’s U.S. Department of Transportation number was No. 4226134.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration says USDOT No. 4226134, We Move You doing business as Green Go Moving , “has no current for-hire operating authority with FMCSA.”

The Department of Transportation’s Safety and Fitness Electronic Records (SAFER) system says: “The entity does not have any operating authority and/or is not authorized to engage in interstate, for-hire operations.”

The estimate prepared for Garcia by We Move You’s Anthea Curtiss was for $2,098.79. Garcia paid $500 down. At pick-up on Aug. 23, the movers demanded a cash payment. Garcia and the final invoice from We Move You says she paid $1,118.

The final invoice from We Move You was $11,012.88. The difference between estimate and invoice: $8,914.09.

None of the $1,138.86 of discounts in the estimate factored into the invoice. The fuel charges estimated at $471.15 were $1,130 instead. We Move You charged Garcia an extra $1,100 for packing material.

We Move You’s movers demanded Garcia pay the remaining $9,394.88 before they unloaded her furniture. She said she’s wired We Move You $5,942.88, but, as of Thursday, Oct. 17, still has none of her possessions.

Garcia said she and her two daughters are still sleeping on an inflatable mattress.

Thompson, who demanded the Miami Herald no longer call him, didn’t respond to text messages about Garcia’s move or requesting USDOT numbers for his companies authorized for interstate moves.

According to the website for Thompson Nations & Affiliates, that company is run out of 2814 Silver Star Rd., Suite 219 in Orlando, and uses the cellphone number, 863-231-4582, at which the Miami Herald has reached Thompson. The Silver Star Road address pops up in the following lists of Thompson companies.
