Several police departments are looking for an escaped suspect who took advantage of a Saturday hospital trip to jump into a sports car and speed away, authorities said.

While entering PortMiami earlier Saturday, Theodric Collins was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Patrol after a records check revealed several arrest warrants, said Detective Angel Rodriguez, a Miami-Dade police spokesperson.

Miami-Dade police were called and promptly arrested Collins, who soon after said he had chest pains. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took him to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s emergency room.

At around 2:25 p.m., Collins was medically cleared, and a Miami-Dade police officer began the process of taking him in. During that time, Collins, who was handcuffed, escaped to a waiting newer model Silver Maserati with an Alabama license plate.

Shortly before 4 p.m., a license plate reader picked up the car in Jupiter.

Miami-Dade police alerted other law enforcement agencies to search.

Collins is five feet, nine inches and has a medium build, police said. A clothing description has not been provided.

Details of Collins’ warrants were not available.

This developing story will be updated.
