I am by no stretch of the imagination a “runner.” I’ve never enjoyed the activity; it stirs up my asthma symptoms (especially in chilly weather), and it doesn’t give me the rush of endorphins that many people seem to experience. Basically, you’ll never see me at a marathon, and I’m fine with that.

I do, however, love queuing up a good Spotify playlist and taking a nice, long walk after work every day. It’s the perfect way for me to decompress and enjoy some time outside and get a decent bit of exercise while I’m at it. I try to walk at least three miles a day, and some days I end up walking five or more — which means a good pair of walking shoes is essential.

Historically, I’ve opted for something retro-inspired and relatively affordable like a Saucony Jazz or an Asics Tiger . However, my aunt recently gifted me a pair of On Cloudultra 2 running shoes — and while they’re not something I’d typically gravitate to when shoe shopping, I’ve found that they’re incredibly comfortable and perfect for my long walks.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Swiss shoe company, On is known for its lines of “Cloud” running shoes. You’ve got your Cloudrunner, Cloudmonster, Cloudvista, Cloudstratus, Cloudflow, Cloudultra and various others, all of which boast a feather-light design and feet-supporting construction. Thanks to On’s CloudTec cushioning system , the shoes also help absorb impact and reduce strain while you’re running in them.

These Cloudultra 2 shoes feature soft Helion superfoam soles and a 5 millimeter heel-to-toe drop (which means the heel sits 5 mm higher than the forefoot). The knitted sock uppers are made of 100% recycled polyester, and the loops on the tongue and the back of the shoes make them super easy to pull on and off. The Missiongrip traction on the outsole means these shoes can handle all types of terrain, from smooth pavement to rugged trails. Plus, they’re available in nine colors, from a mauvey pink to a sandy beige to a heather blue (which is the color I have).

One thing I love about these shoes is how lightweight they are. When I have them on, I can barely even feel them on my feet. They’re also super comfortable — it really does feel like I’m walking on a cloud. I love the elasticized openings of the shoes, which grip snugly around my ankles and never rub or cause blisters, even when I’m walking upwards of five miles. And since my feet are on the wider side, I appreciate that the Cloudultra 2s aren’t too narrow and run pretty true to size.

Plenty of other folks have given high marks to these shoes, too — particularly in regards to the comfort factor. “These seriously felt like slippers right out of the box,” said one reviewer on Nordstrom . “I have slightly wide feet, and these are great in my normal size.” Another Nordstrom customer , who titled their review “EXTREME COMFORT,” also praised the cloudlike sensation of the Cloudultra 2. “Feels like literally walking on clouds all day, without any discomfort nor breaking in.”

The only downside to these shoes? They’re not cheap, with the price generally running around $180. But for shoes this comfy and lightweight, I’d say they’re a worthy splurge, especially if you do a lot of walking (or running, if you’re into that). Grab a pair today, and your feet will thank you!
