TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) – This weekend’s violence in Pennsylvania and Miami has some people questioning how they would react during these types of incidents.

How will Trump’s assassination attempt affect the 2024 election? UT Tyler professor weighs in

“Some people chose to do wrong,” said Connie Vaughan with Quality Consulting and Security Services Inc.

There are steps you can take to be prepared before and during your outing to keep you and your family safe regardless of the event.

“Be aware of your surroundings that’s one thing you can do,” said Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith.

The Department of Homeland Security has always asked the public to do your research before going out to any event. That means learning the security requirements, where exits are and talking to your children so they are prepared as well.

Smith gave the following advise for attending large events like music concerts, political rallies or sports games.

“Keep your head on a swivel, you know you’re there to see the concert but you’re going to have to be vigilant to keep you and your friends safe,” said Smith. “Look around and if you see anything suspicious, report it immediately. “

Vaughn’s security advice is similar to Sheriff Smith’s. He advised that people should stay alert and report any suspicious activity to security.

Despite these recent instances of violence, Smith believes people should not stop going to events.

“If we do that the other people win,” said Smith.

Another option to help you feel prepared, would be to take first aid and self-defense classes.
